Union Pacific completed the Oregon Shorline Railroad in 1883. This opened up southwest Idaho for settlement.
The development and expansion of rail travel has been instrumental to Nampa's history. Nampa is milepost zero for a number of short-line railroads, meaning it is a central location for the Idaho Northern Railroad, Boise, Nampa and Owyhee Railroad and the Idaho Central Railroad. According to the Union Pacific website, Pocatello and Nampa are home to important terminals for Union Pacific, serving as a hub for branch line activities and crew change points.
