    <dcterms:description><![CDATA[William Bryan was an attorney from Salem Illinois. He won the election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1890 and served until 1895. He was a dominant force in the Democratic Party, running three times as the party&#039;s nominee for President of the United States in the 1896, 1900, and 1908 elections.<br />
<br />
He was famous for:<br />
President Woodrow Wilson appointed William Jennings Bryan Secretary of State on March 5, 1913. He entered into duty the same day and served as Secretary until his resignation on June 9, 1915.<br />
<br />
Bryan participated as a prosecutor in the famous 1925 Scope&#039;s &quot;Monkey Trial,&quot; in which a young biology teacher, John Thomas Scopes (also from Salem, IL), was indicted for teaching evolution in the Dayton, Tennessee, High School.]]></dcterms:description>
