In 1885, James H. began work on the Oregon Short Line as an "emigration agent," transporting people by rail to Nampa.
Also, J. H. was an ordained minister of the Church of the Brethren as well as clerical jobs. With his wife Julia, the family raised chickens and other livestock to make ends meet.
